I have had many hobbies over the years in my earlier life it was motorcycles and cars both of which I had many. I managed to pass both of my test when I was motorcycle 16 and the car at 17
The first machine I ever had I bought new was a Italian engine which fitted on to a bicycle it was for 48cc 4 stroke engine (Italian) fixed round the bottom bracket and used the chain to drive the wheel. I very soon graduated to bigger and better machines I had a Excelsior consort and 175cc BSA Bantam ( which I bought brand-new)and many other secondhand machines including a Vincent black shadow 500cc which I had for two weeks,Before the engine seized and it was too expensive to put right. So it was sold as seen
The last machine I had in that era was a Douglas dragonfly +90 a beautiful machine way ahead of its time.350cc twin horizontally opposed (bit like a BMW).
In my early 40s I've got the urge again and I acquired a 250 Honda off-road machine and a couple of Yamaha"s a 400 and a 750 road bikes.
This era did not last very long I've got fed up with being cold and getting wet
I had several cars mixed in with the motorcycles the first one being at 1932 Wolseley hornet (The wheels kept falling off only held on by three wheel nuts) the trick was to wind fuse wire around the wheel studs and then force wheel nuts on hoping that I would bind more tightly. This was sold to a scrapyard prior to me joining the RAF.
I had many other cars and vans I now drive a Volkswagen Tiguan It has absolutely every conceivable extra but boring to drive (But has never let me down)
Fortunately we have a 24 year old Mercedes 320 SL (Mille Miglia ) Convertible which is in absolute immaculate condition.
Other things I tried
(Golf)
I also played golf thought I was gonna be the worlds greatest golfer but alas this was not to be. Although I did get down to a single figure handicap, unlike most people I gave up golf when I retired
(Photography)
was another thing I dabbled in,In fact I still do I own several cameras a drone,Gimbals and other equipment. I soon learned that it didn't matter how much you spent, you are not always a good photographer. My ratio was about 25 to 1 ,Take 25 pictures to achieve one 1/2 decent Picture
(Computers)
Although I ran a business for 40 odd years I never actually owned a computer until I retired I started with a very basic middle of the range machine with" Microsoft operating system" I found these absolutely fascinating where you could go and what you could do and made loads of friends around the world many of which I still have contact with.
After using a PC for several years a friend of mine talked me into buying an "Apple" I/mac computer I wish now I had gone this route from the start, everything my own now is made by Apple (I/phone I/Pads etc )It's great the fact that they will talk to each other.
(I am now on my fourth upgrade) I still that PC but it's in the loft gathering dust seldom ever switched on.
(Hi-fi sound)
This was something I was interested in right from my early teens, Again the problem was money rather the lack of it that dictated what I can afford I think the best system achieved in my early years was a Quad amplifier system with KEF Cadenza speakers.
Since retiring I have managed to try many of the better systems available and finally decided and settled on Bose Equipment
Reel to Reel Tape Recorders
Most of these machine are ones that I admired In my younger days but could never afford.
I bought my first machine some 10 years ago on Ebay.
I bought more steadily over the years and ended up with around
25 or so machine
I have recently sold all except one of my collection
All the machines were quality machines (Top of the range in a day)
All but two were bought by guys in the sound industry, who with all their digital technology could not produce that special sound you get from Reel to Reel tape.
The other's by keen collectors
____________
The one I elected to keep, which I considered the best of the bunch Was the TEAC 2000 R (Bottom left in picture) although it was a toss up between this and the Akai 747 (Middle right in picture)
This is the first machine I bought, I think I paid somewhere around £150 from eBay.
Reel to Reel recorders such as this was something I was always interested in but could never afford
These are some of the 30/40 small clock last couple of years.
They are mainly battery operated and I doubt if I've paid more than £200 for the lot
